Magnolia Bud Vase
by Laura Fulcher

Greetings friends. Today I want to share a project of something other than a card. I was inspired by a TikTok video I saw where the person took one of the seasonal ceramic vases from the Dollar Tree, removed the graphic on the front then added their own design. I thought it might be a perfect fit with the new Memory Box rub ons. I am really pleased with the finished project and want to give you a few hints to get good results.

This is what the vase looked like before I did anything to it:

I apologize to the world’s best grandma, but I removed the graphic with some nail polish remover and a cotton ball. The following picture gives you a better idea of the size of the mini vase. It is about the size of a typical votive holder:

Once the graphic was gone, I washed the vessel with soap and water and let it dry completely. Now it was time for the rub ons.  As you turn the vase, this is what the rub on looks like from various angles:

The magnolia rub on goes around approximately half of the vase. The best part about the rub on is that it does all the coloring and shading for you.

Here are some tips I learned from the project:

  • Work around the center of the vase. Areas that I had too close to the top or bottom were too curved and it was difficult to add the rub on. The flatter areas are much easier add the rub on.
  • Cut the rub on into smaller sections and add a little at a time. It was so much easier to rub down a small section than trying to do the entire rub on at once. The good news was it was really easy to line up the sections when I added the next one and you can’t really see where they connect.
  • Think about how you want to finish the piece. My vase has no sealant on it because I might use it with a votive and I don’t want it to be flammable. Plus, it gives me the option to remove the rub on at a later date if I want to change the pattern. If you use the finished piece as a bud vase, you might want to seal it so that the water doesn’t take away the rub on pattern.

Thanks so much for stopping by today. I hope you were inspired to make something other than a card!
