Snow Kitty Couple
by Jenny Griffiths

Welcome Crafty Friends,

Today you have a  chance to win a special prize and see another new Deep Edge die up close.  Deep Edge dies can be the workhorse you've been looking for.  Wouldn't you love to cut several layers of paper, fabric, felt, plastic or even thin metal and wood at one time?  These dies work best with a metal shim when cutting multiple layers but you can also cut a single layer without the shim.

The fabrics I used on these ornaments include a thin muslin, a quilted cotton, an upholstery weave, a shimmery linen, a grossgrain ribbon and a thick faux suede/leather…I tried to select a wide variety of fabrics to show the possibilies.  I've shown a photo of the fabrics at the end of this post.  I bought only 1/8 of a yard of each so there is plenty left to make more ornaments and cutting multiple layers at a time will really speed things up.

On the thinner fabrics I used an iron-on fusible interfacing to stiffen the fabric a bit.

Now check out this cute couple of snow kitties…

On this girl kitty I used the quilted cotton for her head and body while the ears and tail were die cut from dotted ribbon.  You'll see a special accent on her reverse side too.  Photos below.  By the way, the whiskers on both kitties are cuttings from my household broom (shhhh, don't tell).

And, here's the boy kitty with his handsome faux suede/leather outfit.  His ears and tail were backed with the fusible cotton interfacing to add stability to the fabric, otherwise they would droop.  The beautiful sparkly metallic hanger is from the new collection of woven Italian ribbons offered by Birch Press–just WOW!

The fabrics I chose all had wonderful texture and worked so well with the new dies—for about $8 I bought all this fabric and have enough to make dozens of ornaments!

You may have noticed the hats and tails on these kitties are in mirror image positions.  I die cut them this way intentionally so they could hang on the tree close together as a couple.  Simply die cut both the tail and hat of one kitty on the reverse side of the patterned fabric.  This way one orients to the left and the other to the right.  You will need to remember this again when you make the solid backing for both kitties.

Reverse side… I simply cut the basic shape pieces a second time in a solid color and glued them to the reverse side.  And now you can see the little red heart on the girl's bum.  When these hang on a tree both sides look finished.  They would make a wonderful gift package topper too.

1Since the finished size of each snow kitty measures 5.5" x 4" they would fit into an A2 size envelope–just add extra postage.

Want a chance to win your own deep edge die?  Leave a comment on this post as well as the other designer posts through Friday, November 17th.  Three people at random will be chosen from all the comments to win the deep edge die of their choice.  The more days you leave a comment, the more chances you have to win! (Limit one comment per person per day).  Good luck!

Thank you for stopping by today, hope you feel inspired to make your own ornaments with these new Snow Kitty Deep Edge dies!

  5. These Snow Kitty ornaments are Purrfect! These would be purrfect for my grandaughters. Thank you for showing all the different fabrics you have used and explaining how to do the reverse cuts, I always struggle to achieve the reverse cuts with fabric. I am thrilled with the idea of the new deep edge dies, I have been wishing for dies that can cut through multiple layers, and especially fabric, and wood veneer. Creating with these dies would make cutting multiples so very easy, more creative possibilities.
