Peerless Watercolor Birds
by Laura Fulcher

Greetings everyone. I hope you have enjoyed the blitz so far. The Winter 2015 release has new Open Studio stamps as well as clear stamp sets with coordinating sayings. There are so many great images to color.

For my cards today, I chose to use the Three Little Birds stamp. I started each card by die cutting 140lb watercolor paper with the new Open Studio Hexagon Layers and then stamped the birds with black Versafine ink (my favorite ink for watercoloring).

Next, I used an assortment of Peerless Watercolors to color the birds and sky.  The first card was colored with Viridian Green, Olive Green, and Light Green paints.  The sky was Alice Blue.

If you change your color palette, you get a completely different look:

The second card used Burnt Umber, Amethyst, and Neutral Tint Peerless Watercolors for the birds and the same Alice Blue for the sky.

Before I talk about the third color palette, I want to talk about making mistakes in cardmaking.  For all of the cards, I finished the look by splattering them with blue and brown watercolor paint.  However, for one of the cards, I didn't test how much paint was on the brush and what was supposed to be a small splatter of paint became a deluge of color sprayed all over the card.  Sigh.  This is a reminder to always test out your sprays, brushes, markers, etc before applying them to your card…..especially as a final step.

I took a cropped picture of the birds so that you could see a third idea for coloring the birds without having to see the sections that are obscured by nickle-sized splotches of paint:

For these birds, I used Warm Sepia, Golden Yellow, and Pearl Gray paints.

If you are interested in trying Peerless Watercolors, you can get a 15 color starter pack at Birch Press design
